The Aerospace Corporation's Engineering and Technology Group (ETG) functions as a corporate pool of engineering skills and services to support the programs. Within ETG, The Acquisition Risk and Reliability Engineering Department (ARRED) supports its customers through rigorous application of risk and reliability tools and processes in support of mission assurance activities for spacecraft, launch, and their associated ground systems.

We have a current need for a reliability engineer to provide technical leadership and expertise for a wide variety of projects and customers; as a member of the ARRED team, you will:

  • Provide reliability technical expertise and independent customer support in the area of space, launch, and ground systems mission assurance (MA) for national security space and civil and commercial customers
  • Perform independent assessments of, and sometimes develop, failure modes, effects and criticality analyses (FMECA) for space, launch, and ground systems
  • Perform assessments of, and sometimes develop, reliability program plans, reliability models, and reliability requirements
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of failure reporting, analysis, and corrective action (FRACAS) application and implementation
  • Participate in parts, materials and processes control boards and failure review boards for space and launch systems
  • Present results of analyses and assessments to management, customers, and associate contractors
  • Coordinate with and reach back to west-coast based staff on an as-needed basis
  • Participate in and sometimes lead small teams to accomplish reliability assessment tasks and assess and improve the effectiveness of reliability practices
  • Help innovate by developing and applying new technologies (e.g., Model-Based Engineering) to reliability engineering in order to enhance existing capabilities and grow capabilities to new application areas

This position could be filled in El Segundo, CA or Chantilly, VA.


Required for Engineering Specialist
  • BS or equivalent degree required in mechanical, electrical, or nuclear engineering, or related field of science or engineering
  • Minimum of 8 years of technical experience after a bachelor's degree
  • Prior demonstrated experience with reliability modeling/predictions, fault tree or failure modes effects analysis, root cause analysis, and reliability planning
  • Strong background in systems engineering
  • Problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify, organize, prioritize, and ensure timely completion of tasks
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with customers, staff, and management
  • Excellent writing skills and a sample of written technical work
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
  • Current and active TS/SCI clearance ( Required for Chantilly, VA)

Additional Requirements for Sr. Engineering Specialist
  • Minimum of 12 years of technical experience after a bachelor's degree
  • Experience leading teams or projects
  • Served as reliability lead on one or more major space systems
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance
  • Current and active TS/SCI clearance ( Required for Chantilly, VA)

Preferred For Engineering Specialist
  • Graduate degree in engineering or reliability
  • Reliability engineering certification (e.g. ASQ)
  • Familiarity/experience with SAPHIRE, RELEX / Windchill, or other reliability engineering tools
  • Familiarity with Model-Based Engineering (MBE) a plus
  • Current and active TS/SCI clearance

Preferred For Sr. Engineering Specialist
  • Recognition in reliability community as an expert in the field through publications and/or symposia or conference presentations
  • Experience with design for reliability (DfR), physics of failure (PoF) or parts materials and processes (PM&P)
  • Demonstrates initiative and innovates in reliability engineering domain by researching and developing new techniques
  • Current and active TS/SCI clearance
