Responsibilities

The Space Instrumentation Department builds satellite and ground-based instruments and small satellite platforms to characterize space phenomenology and life-limiting and performance-limiting impacts to satellite systems along with potential new technologies. The department supports a broad cross-section of the Corporation in design, assembly, test, and characterization of electro-mechanical systems which involve particle detectors, lasers and associated communications, RF communications, high speed focal plane arrays, satellite avionics, mechanisms, optical assemblies, electronics packaging, and test equipment. The successful applicant will contribute by performing tasks including computer systems architecture design, schematic capture, circuit board layout oversight, electrical testing, embedded software development, field programmable gate array development, and data acquisition/user interface programming for support equipment. The position offers the opportunity for a creative individual to innovate in a fast-paced instrument development environment where direct access to and mentoring by senior staff are provided to accelerate the learning process.

Key Functions

  • Develop microcontroller-scale computer architectures for satellite, airborne, and ground based scientific instrumentation including CubeSat systems (e.g., Microchip PIC, Vorago Cortex-M0, Xlinix Zynq)
  • Develop schematics for circuit board assemblies utilizing embedded software (microprocessors and microcontrollers) and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (Xilinx and Microsemi FPGAs)
  • Design, test, and debug embedded microcontroller/microprocessor applications
  • Design, simulate, test, and debug embedded FPGA code
  • Develop LabVIEW, Microsoft C#, or Python applications programs for data acquisition and support equipment
  • Develop User's Guides for deliverable hardware items


This position can be filled as a Member of Technical Staff or an Engineering Specialist.

Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field with at least 2 years of computer engineering or electrical engineering design experience; coursework may qualify depending on relevancy
  • Programming experience with some combination of: embedded microcontroller or microprocessors, field programmable gate arrays, LabVIEW, or Microsoft Visual C#
  • Experience in Microsoft Office applications including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Experience multi-tasking an array of engineering design challenges
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.


Preferred
  • Experience with Microsemi or Xilinx FPGA design tools
  • Experience in embedded software design
  • Experience programming in LabView, Microsoft Visual C#, or Python


Required for an Engineering Specialist
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field with at least 8 years of computer engineering or electrical engineering design experience
  • Programming experience with some combination of: embedded microcontroller or microprocessors, field programmable gate arrays, LabVIEW, or Microsoft Visual C#
  • Experience developing and presenting conceptual architectures in a diverse team setting where multiple engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, software) are involved
  • Experience in Microsoft Office applications including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Experience developing system requirements and design review presentations
  • Experience multi-tasking an array of engineering design challenges
  • Experience working under minimal supervision, to self-initiate activities, and to work within project timelines
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

  • Experience in embedded software design
