Responsibilities

The Aerospace Corporation's Network Systems Department (NSD) is seeking a Senior Communication and Network Systems Engineer specializing in space and ground communication network architecture definition, development, modeling and simulation, performance analysis/assessment, and network management concepts and techniques. The Network Systems Department is a component of the Communication and Network Architectures Subdivision within the Communication Technologies and Engineering Division. NSD supports Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC), National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), and other US Government, and Civil/Commercial customers in the design, analysis, modeling, simulation, and anomaly resolution of space and ground communication networks. You will play a vital role in leading technical teams and provide subject technical expertise in the areas of Communication and Network systems to ensure mission objectives are achieved.

This position can be filled as an Aerospace Engineering Specialist or Senior Engineering Specialist

Key Functions
  • Lead in various communication and network engineering tasks and projects through network systems architecture definition, development, analysis, modeling & simulation, and prototype development/validation
  • Lead development of innovative concepts and algorithms in supporting areas of network management, routing, mobility, performance/reliability analysis, traffic modeling, software-defined networking, network protocols, and network resiliency
  • Provide technical analysis and technical leadership to develop the next generation of communication and network architectures and requirements
  • Design, analyze, and simulate space and ground network systems architecture
  • Develop and assess the performance of satellite and ground network systems, network quality, network security, network resiliency, and network protocols
  • Provide recommendations for network designs and architectures based on technical analysis of performance, affordability and risk
  • Utilize network testbeds to investigate new technologies and assess system performance
  • Identify and develop new business opportunities with new and existing customers
  • Provide independent technical leadership, mentorship, and direction to less experienced staff
  • Coordinate tasks and participate in technical meetings for SMC, NRO, and Civil & Commercial customers working closely with members of a diverse team comprising military officers and Government civilians, prime contractors, SE&I contractors and other FFRDCs
  • Present technical and project status briefings to management and customers
  • Lead system level trade studies and briefings for design concepts, protocols, requirements analysis, design reviews, system installation and integration oversight and validation of network system requirements
  • Lead specialized technical studies and internal research and development (R&D) efforts


Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or science from an accredited university
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in communication and network systems development
  • Strong technical background in digital communication theory, network protocols, and network management
  • Understanding of Physical, Media Access Control (MAC), and network layers
  • Understanding of emerging communication and network technologies (e.g., LTE, 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning, etc.)
  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills, strong communication skills, and ability to interact well in group meeting/working environments
  • Ability to present results effectively in briefings and technical reports
  • This position requires a current DoD SECRET clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government


Preferred
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science in the areas of digital communications and network systems
  • Experience with satellite communication network systems
  • Experience or understanding of Internet protocols including IPv4/6 and IPsec
  • Experience in Python, Matlab, and C/C++
  • Modeling and simulation experience in STK, SOAP, SignalPro, and OPNET preferred
  • Experience with network management systems and network security
  • Experience with transition from ATM to IP networks
  • Project development experience and demonstrated ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams
  • Active Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) or Top Secret (TS) U.S. Security Clearance


Qualifications for consideration as a Senior Engineering Specialist

Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or science from an accredited university
  • Minimum 12 years of experience in communication and network systems development
  • Strong technical background in communication networks and systems engineering
  • Leadership experience on development of space and ground network architecture definition/development, trade studies, and requirements/interface definitions
  • In-depth understanding of Physical, Media Access Control (MAC), and network layers
  • In-depth understanding of emerging communication and network technologies (e.g., LTE, 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning, etc.)
  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills, strong communication skills, and ability to interact well in group meeting/working environments
  • Ability to present results effectively in briefings and technical reports
  • Experience with leading large cross-functional teams as a project lead and/or technical lead
  • This position requires a current DoD SECRET clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government


Preferred
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science in the areas of digital communications and network systems
  • At least 15 years of experience in space and ground network systems development
  • Experience with satellite communication network systems
  • Experience with protected satellite communications
  • Experience or understanding of Internet protocols including IPv4/6 and IPsec
  • Experience in Python, Matlab, and/or C/C++
  • Modeling and simulation experience in, STK, SOAP, SignalPro, and OPNET preferred
  • Experience with network management systems and network security
  • Experience with transition from ATM to IP networks
  • Project development experience and demonstrated ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams
  • Active Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) or Top Secret (TS) U.S. Security Clearance
