Responsibilities

The Missile Defense and Space Sensors Division provides technical and programmatic support to the Missile Defense Agency (MDA). MDA is developing the nation's Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) to protect the U.S. against the threat of limited ballistic missile attack and to defend against regional missile threats to U.S. forces, allies, and partners. The Project Engineer will support the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Targets and Countermeasures Directorate. The selected candidate will work with a combined team of government, private contractor, FFRDC/UARC, and SETA personnel performing engineering design and development, testing, analyses, system production, and fielding of target missiles used to exercise the Ballistic Missile Defense System. Frequent interaction with other MDA Directorate personnel, contractors, subcontractors, and vendor personnel is expected.

This position can be filled as a Level 2: Project Engineer or as a Level 3: Sr. Project Engineer.

Key Functions

  • Directly work with MDA programs, DoD stakeholders, and private vendors to assist in the design, production, testing, and fielding of complex ballistic missile systems.
  • Perform technical risk assessments and develop feasible mitigation plans.
  • Coordinate multidiscipline technical teams formed to solve complex technical aerospace issues related to a new target system's launch vehicle, payload, and support equipment design, testing, production, and fielding.
  • Coordinate the development, approval, and delivery of technical reviews and reports associated with tasks assigned by MDA.
  • Conduct independent reviews of target unit, sub-system, and system development, acceptance, qualification, and other life cycle testing protocols, technical reports, technical briefings, analysis reports, and risk assessments.
  • Participate in ballistic missile target system major milestone readiness assessments.
  • Participate and provide technical assessments in ballistic missile target system risk, system failure, engineering change, manufacturing, configuration, and qualification review boards.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications for Level 2: Project Engineer
  • Accredited Bachelor's degree or higher in aerospace or mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, or equivalent technical disciplines
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Secret clearance. This is issued by the US government. A US citizenship is required.
  • 8 or more years of experience in the design and testing of complex mechanical or aerospace hardware
  • Experience working with multidiscipline technical teams
  • Experience speaking and presenting technical material to peers and leadership personnel
  • Experience supporting failure review boards, providing risk assessments, and developing feasible mitigation paths
  • Knowledge of aerospace related military, industry (i.e. IEEE, AIAA, etc.), and range safety standards
  • Ability to perform 20% domestic travel to programmatic, design, manufacturing, and test facilities to conduct in-depth technical assessments


Required Qualifications for Level 3: Sr. Project Engineer
  • Accredited Bachelor's degree or higher in aerospace or mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, or equivalent technical disciplines
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Secret clearance. This is issued by the US government. A US citizenship is required.
  • 12 or more years of relate experience in the design and testing of complex mechanical systems or aerospace hardware
  • Experience leading multidiscipline technical teams
  • Experience speaking and presenting technical material to engineers and leaders
  • Experience supporting failure review boards, providing risk assessments, and developing feasible mitigation paths
  • Demonstrated application of aerospace related Military Standards, Industry Standards (i.e. IEEE, AIAA, etc.) and range safety standards
  • Ability to perform 20% domestic travel to programmatic, design, manufacturing, and test facilities to conduct in-depth technical assessments


Preferred
  • Advanced degree in engineering, science, or related technical field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Missile Defense Agency operations, policies, procedures, and the Ballistic Missile Defense System
  • Experience conducting Missile Defense System Ballistic Missile Defense System testing
  • Demonstrated launch vehicle, payload, and support equipment structural and mechanical design, analysis, and testing
  • Demonstrated experience working in a matrixed environment tasking matrixed engineers and scientists to complete technical design assessments and analyses.
  • Experience leading multidiscipline technical teams formed to solve complex technical aerospace issues of new target systems designs, developments, testing, production, fielding, and post flight data assessments.
