Responsibilities

The Lidar and Sensor Calibration Section at The Aerospace Corporation has an opening for a highly motivated engineer or scientist to support experimental programs in sensor illumination and laser remote sensing. As a member of the Photonics Technology Department, successful applicants will participate in the design, construction, and operation of laboratory and field experiments designed to advance applications of laser technology in support of space systems. Duties will include the construction and alignment of laboratory and field instruments, experimnetal set-up and execution, data analysis and preparation of reports. The diverse portfolio of experiments will provide applicants with initiative considerable opportunity for the acquisition of knowledge and skills.

Key Functions

  • Collaborates with engineers on laboratory testing. Suggests appropriate materials, test equipment and techniques. Refines test designs as needed
  • Writes test procedures and equipment operational procedures to support existing and new lab tests or facilities
  • Maintains laboratory equipment. Builds, repairs, and ensures the calibration of the equipment. Sets up instrumentation for tests
  • Ensures that all safety rules and regulations are being followed. Attends necessary laboratory safety training
  • Researches and recommends tools and equipment for capital purchases
  • The selected candidate will be expected to participate as needed in offsite field campaigns


This position can be filled as a Photonics Technology Specialist II or III.

Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, optics, or a closely related field with 2 or more years of lab experience
  • Experience troubleshooting problems and prioritizing tasks and projects
  • Experience writing technical reports and giving technical presentations
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.


Preferred
  • Experience in electronics fabrication, instrument control, and programming (C++, LabView, or Python) is strongly desired.
  • Ability to perform numerical analyses using programs such as Matlab
  • Practical experience with lasers and optical systems
  • Experience operating and maintaining sensitive electronics equipment


Required for Photonics Technology Specialist III
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, optics, or a closely related field with five or more years of lab experience
  • Experience preforming numerical analyses using programs such as Matlab
  • Experience troubleshooting problems and prioritizing tasks and projects
  • Experience writing technical reports and giving technical presentations
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.


Preferred for Photonics Technology Specialist III

  • Laboratory environment with possible exposure to hazardous materials
  • Certain laboratories may operate at a high noise level
