Responsibilities

The Laser Technology and Optical Communication Section of the Photonics Technology Department at The Aerospace Corporation has an opening for a highly motivated applied optical physicist to conduct laboratory-based research and development in optoelectronic device physics and photonic integration technology for applications such as free-space optical communication, optical signal/data processing, microwave photonics, and chip-scale physics sensors using experimentally validated physics-based modeling and simulation of material and device test structures. Duties will include developing and refining subject matter expertise by design, fabrication, and testing of integrated photonic test articles and device prototypes, and providing subject matter expertise on optoelectronic and integrated photonic technologies to government customers.

Duties

  • Investigate new or existing novel concepts for miniaturization of optical comm, LIDAR, and optical and microwave photonic sensors, and simulate, fabricate, and test proof-of-concept prototypes
  • Develop and perform clean room processes for fabrication of R&D devices, including leveraging internal or external facilities and staff
  • Develop measurement apparatus and methodology and conduct laboratory research to characterize photonic devices and establish, verify and/or validate phenomenology and functionalities of photonic materials, components, subsystems, and systems
  • Perform multi-physics modeling of photonic devices, generate TCAD layouts, develop CONOPs for novel prototypes
  • Support ongoing interdisciplinary and inter-organizational projects, and cultivate external collaborations within areas of research. Goals range from proof-of-principle demonstrations to support for delivery of mission payloads and operational support
  • Work with other staff and Department management to develop and implement R&D and program support strategies
  • Devise and recommend improvements in data reduction and analytical methods
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed literature articles to document knowledge generation and research outcomes
  • Support offsite field campaigns and customer meetings as required
