Responsibilities

The Laser Technology and Optical Communication Section of the Photonics Technology Department at The Aerospace Corporation has an opening for a highly motivated scientist/engineer to conduct laboratory-based research and prototype hardware development for free-space optical communications for space and airborne-related applications. The candidate will support a range of activities including (but not limited to) current and next-generation small-sat laser communications demos, link simulation and analysis, laboratory testbeds for optical Tx/Rx technology development and evaluation, ground station receiver development, optical waveform and system evaluation and verification.

Duties
• Support ongoing interdisciplinary and inter-organizational projects related to free-space optical communications, and cultivate external collaborations within areas of research

  • Goals range from proof-of-principle demonstrations to support delivery of mission payloads and provide operational support

• Support/lead optical communication architecture definition, develop and characterize Tx/Rx payloads, evaluate photonic sub-components, construct/support optical testbeds, and explore insertion opportunities for next-generation space missions.
• Investigate new and existing modulation/coding formats, define requirements, and provide technical assessment related to laser communication for various customer need scenarios through internal trade studies, concept of operations definition, and risk reduction testing.
• Perform link analyses and simulations of various free-space optical communication protocols and understand the impact of environmental conditions and system imperfections on the operation system through BER analysis and develop ways to mitigate the effect of such factors on an operational system.
• Work with staff and management to develop and implement R&D and program support strategies
• Prepare reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed literature articles to document knowledge generation and research outcomes
