Responsibilities

The Aerospace Corporation is seeking an undergraduate Organic Chemistry student for a 10-week summer internship opportunity. This position will be located at in El Segundo, CA. The qualified candidate will work in the Materials Science Department of the Space Materials Laboratory. The summer project will focus on application of polymers in high temperature environments.

Key Functions

• Assist staff with the chemical synthesis of polymers with characterization of starting material components by chromatography.
• Purification and isolation of intermediate molecules will also be involved.
• Analytical and thermal characterization of end products using spectroscopy, chromatography, X-ray scattering and thermal analysis.
• Participates with an interdisciplinary team in ongoing research or technical programs with academic collaboration partners.
• Training and mentorship will be provided.
• A final summary of this work will be required in the form of an oral presentation. A manuscript of the work will ideally be submitted to a technical journal for publication.

Qualifications

Required
• The undergraduate candidate should have taken a science course such as general chemistry, physical chemistry (molecular spectroscopy) or organic chemistry.

• The candidate preferably should have classwork in organic reactions, structure of organic molecules with associated laboratory class.

• Also, the candidate should have attention to detail and ability to plan and execute on experimental plans.

• Students pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science are eligible to apply.

• 3.0 + GPA based on a 4.0 scale
