Responsibilities

The Surface Science and Engineering Department focusses on material interfacial phenomena of importance in space and launch vehicles. The department has three sections: Spacecraft Contamination Effects, Tribology, and Laser-Material interactions. Each section conducts research and program support using state of the art surface analysis equipment and one-of-a-kind instrumentation developed to understand the specific properties of space materials. The Laser-Materials interactions area possesses truly unique capabilities, applying laser light to materials to imbue properties and generate novel structures to generate new functionality.

Key Functions

  • Provide laboratory support work for staff members
  • Perform wet chemical analyses
  • Perform instrumental chemical analyses
  • Maintain laboratory condition
  • Develop new laboratory and analytical skill


This position can be filled as an Analytical Chemistry Specialist I or II.

Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor's in chemistry or closely related field or an associate's degree with a minimum of five years of laboratory experience
  • Experience with instrumental analysis, such as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, chromatography, etc.
  • Wet chemistry skills
  • Experience with computer data handling
  • Experience contributing to lab research activities
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.


Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or science
  • Chemical laboratory experience, including instrumental analysis
  • Experience with data formatting, analysis, and plotting programs such as MatLab


Required for Analytical Chemistry Specialist II
  • Bachelor's in chemistry or closely related field with at least three years of experience or an associate's degree with a minimum of eight years of laboratory experience
  • Experience with instrumental analysis, such as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, chromatography, etc.
  • Wet chemistry skills
  • Experience with computer data handling
  • Experience contributing to lab research activities
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
