Senior Software Development Project Manager


AbleVets, LLC is a fast-growing Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) providing healthcare information technology services and resources to help the VA and DoD improve the lives of the people they serve. AbleVets has an opportunity for an experienced, motivated Senior Software Development Project Manager to lead one of our most critical, high-visibility, software and system engineering Programs.This position is located in our Chantilly, VA office. 


The successful candidate will have diverse IT project experience including the ability to lead software projects of medium complexity and size; experience coordinating activities across multiple organizations and stakeholders, experience managing distributed team resources, exceptional written and verbal communication skills, familiarity/experience with leading Agile projects, and a demonstrated team player style/approach. Project manager must understand implementations and protections of PII, code modernization and transformation, and developing and executing “as-is” architectures into “to-be” architectures. The Senior Software Development Project Manager will be responsible for the overall performance and success of the project including, but not limited to: the day-to-day management of engineering tasks within the program, deliverables, customer relations, internal reporting, and risk management. Duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing the customer relationship and providing project direction and leadership
  • Identifying and mitigating risks to the program
  • Managing to cost, schedule, and performance for the engineering workstream
  • Effectively leading technical professionals and a cross-functional team
  • Ensuring execution of quality deliverables within established schedules
  • Collaborating with teams across the customer organization to improve processes, results, and customer experience
  • Ensuring the organization and processes remain aligned with customer policies and external directives
  • Coordinate with Government staff to support software development lifecycle processes, to include requirements planning, release management, and software deployments
  • Lead a team of highly talented engineers including development, testing, and deployment
  • Ensure team's understanding of business goals, priorities, and how they align with customer needs and business direction
  • Be responsible for leading efforts related to improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the development and operations team, through modernizing approach, process, and tools
  • Guide the continual improvement of our software development abilities
  • Partner with Business Owners/Product Management to ensure thorough descriptions of requirements and enable rapid iteration of feature requirements
  • Lead rapid release cycles for functional changes to the application
  • Participate in brainstorming, technical conferences, and workshops for advancement of research and technical direction of the company


  • Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Systems, Business, or related scientific or technical discipline with a minimum of ten (10) years of related project management experience. An additional ten (10) years of additional relevant experience may be substituted for degree
  • Demonstrated and hands-on experience in project management, Agile project management experience strongly preferred
  • Able to define and implement project metrics for scope, schedule, cost, and quality
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Local travel and travel within the U.S. a couple times a year for up to a week at a time
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance 

Preferred/Desired Skills:

  • PMP certification
  • CSM certification
  • Experience with IBM Rational Collaborative Application Lifecycle Management (CALM) Toolset including IBM Rational Team Concert, IBM Rational DOORS Next Generation, and IBM Rational Quality Manager
  • Experience managing Firm Fixed Price (FFP) software development contracts
  • Experience working with the Department of Veterans Affairs
