Federal Project Manager I

AbleVets, LLC, A Cerner Company, provides healthcare information technology services and resources to help the VA and DoD improve the lives of the people they serve. AbleVets has an opportunity for an experienced, motivated Federal Project Manager I  to support information technology projects for our customers. The position will be based on site in Arlington, Virginia.


The successful candidate will have diverse IT program experience, must be well-versed in full systems development life cycle methodologies, strategic information planning, business process re-engineering, and management practices. The Federal Project Manager I  will be responsible for all program activities while delivering to scope, schedule, and budget objectives. Duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan and direct work of individuals as part of cross-functional teams
  • Manage program finances with guidance from direct leader
  • Assess, manage and report on program risks
  • Help develop estimates and plans for all phases of the program with guidance from direct leader
  • Provide input to Statements of Work for vendors
  • Review work products to meet quality requirements as written
  • Monitor and control work, taking corrective action based on variations
  • Has good working relationship with client and is responsive to client requests
  • Aware of related programs in client environment
  • Identify to direct leader areas in program that need improvement
  • Contribute lessons learned to direct leader
  • Deliver program reviews with guidance from direct leader
  • Identify team members with performance issues and influences them for better performance
  • Provide input for team members' performance reviews
  • Accurately report plans and status through written and oral means
  • Create and deliver presentations with guidance from direct leader
  • Ensure team members are doing assigned tasks
  • Express program goals to others


  • Bachelor’s degree and eight (8) years of experience.  An additional six (6) years can be substituted for degree requirement.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams of 2 or more people on software development and general Information Technology projects
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience leading Agile programs with multiple teams operating concurrently
  • Demonstrated ability to create detailed estimates and plans
  • Demonstrated experience managing program budgets including P&L
  • Demonstrated experience managing and dealing with risk
  • Able to define, implement and use program metrics for scope, schedule, cost, quality and general decision making
  • Able to use program management tools such as JIRA, MS Project, SharePoint, and use analytical models (e.g., capacity planning, trending, etc.) in Excel or other tools
  • Willingness to support business development and sales activities
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including team building and client relationship skills
  • This position may support a government contract and have access to classified or government protected information for which US citizenship is required
  • Must be able to obtain required clearances
  • Must be able to travel when needed up to 10%
