Cyber Security Engineer


AbleVets, LLC, is a fast growing Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) providing healthcare information technology services and resources to help the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Department of Defense (DoD) to improve the lives of the people they serve. AbleVets, has an opportunity available for an experienced motivated, Cyber Security Engineer to support our VA customer. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing system security engineering and Cybersecurity support to the VA. The cyber security engineer has IT experience with NIST 800-37,” Guide to Applying Risk Management Framework to Federal Information Systems,” NIST 800-53rev4 “Security and Privacy Controls for Federal Information Systems and Organizations.” 


Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:


  • Implement the Cyber Security requirements of IT systems and applications documenting them in formal security engineering documents using Risk Management Framework and supporting artifacts associated with the Authorization process
  • Identify security risks through the security impact analysis, system risk assessments and technology security risk assessment and document in a report.
  • Organize, develop, and present security briefings, written summaries, and written reports incorporating narrative, tabular and/or graphic elements on A&A activities
  • Implement IT security solutions and assures successful implementation
  • Apply knowledge of security principles, policy, and regulations to daily tasking
  • Provide IT security engineering support to cross-functional project teams to ensure that VA security policies, processes, and controls are adhered to, planned for, implemented throughout the project lifecycle, and provide strategic cyber security support for OIS
  • Provide an analysis of how VA currently employs and embeds Cybersecurity into its cloud environment, datacenters and mobile technologies,
  • Develop systems security engineering documents based on engineering principles from NIST 800 160, including any specific recommendations describing efficiencies and improvements
  • Establish standard operating procedures for embedding security-driven processes into the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
  • Experience working in the FedRAMP cloud environment understanding IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS regarding cloud service provider security control responsibilities and customer responsibilities
  • Effectively and efficiently communicate and collaborate with external and internal customers to analyze and monitor a project’s security posture and status
  • Effectively following-up with key project team members
  • Engage with VA client on security matters
  • Able to participate in a small team of Cyber Security Engineers and Analysts to provide deliverables and services to government client.


  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in computer science, electronics engineering, or other engineering or technical discipline is required; eight (8) years’ experience may be substituted for education requirement
  • At least eight (8) years of related experience, including experience with:
    • Risk Management Framework
    • Application Software Security / threat modeling
    • Authorization Requirements Process for Federal Government
    • Information Assurance
    • FISMA and FedRAMP requirements
  • Expert technical knowledge of risk management, and information security concepts and technologies
  • Experience with Cyber Security document management and familiar with security and privacy rules
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Excellent written skills for preparing reports and briefings
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to facilitate and coordinate efforts with key government and non-government stakeholders
  • U.S. Citizenship is required as is successfully passing a thorough Government background screening process requiring the completion of detailed forms and fingerprinting
  • Ability to obtain a public trust
  • Previous Government contracting work experience
