Director, Data Science




An exciting data science leadership role that works directly with the Kroger e-commerce team to deliver online customer experiences. This role will manage a data science team in developing and deploying sciences that make recommendations directly to customers on Kroger’s website and mobile app. This role sits within a broader data science team tasked to help drive forward Kroger’s emerging e-commerce business. Our data science team leverages large volumes of data to develop powerful sciences using cutting edge machine learning, natural language processing, and mathematical techniques to improve products, processes, and systems that positively impact our customers. We lead our organization in identifying and adopting the tools and technologies that will continue to position our company as the recognized analytical leader within our industry.



  • Manage a team of data scientists in developing customer facing recommendation systems using machine learning algorithms (supervised and unsupervised) and natural language processing methods
  • Provide project specific coaching and direction to junior data scientists, as well as career development support
  • Collaborate closey with 84.51° and Kroger data engineers to deploy and automate sciences that will scale to Kroger’s digital customer base
  • Identify opportunities to improve online customer experiences via A/B testing, Multi-arm bandit, design of experiments
  • Engage with Kroger stakeholders to translate business questions into statistical and machine learning paradigms
  • Lead organizational innovation based on progress being made via academic and industry best practices



  • 6+ years developing analytical solutions using advanced statistical methods and machine learning algorithms
  • 6+ years querying data from relational databases using SQL
  • 6+ years using R or Python to develop analytical solutions
  • 6+ years with data wrangling, data cleaning and prep, dimensionality reduction
  • 6+ years with Big Data concepts, tools, and architecture (e.g. Hadoop, Pig, Hive, Spark, Sparkling Water)
  • Experience with managing, recruiting, training, developing, coaching, and/or inspiring highly technical associates
  • Ability to create computationally efficient solutions
  • Strong academic background in mathematics, statistics, computer science, economics, or similar discipline
  • Data visualization skills and ability to present technical solutions to non-technical audience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong analytical, creative problem-solving and decision making skills
  • Strong business acumen; grocery and/or retail experience is a plus
