Najee studied print and broadcast journalism in college. While he imagined having a career in the journalism field, his plans changed after he began tutoring students. Education became his new passion, and after graduation, Najee returned to Newark and joined Uncommon Schools.
Running a great urban public school is important, rewarding, and challenging work. The goal of the Instructional Fellowship—like the one Najee is participating in—is to prepare rising school leaders to found and sustain schools that prepare students for college and change the trajectory of students’ lives.
“When I saw my principal teach, it was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. I was like, ‘Wow, the leaders here are master teachers,’ and that’s something that I think staff and teachers are really inspired by.”
“When I think about the future, something that really excites me as an elementary school teacher is being able to see my students go on to high school and then reach out to me with the good news that they’re going to college. I really look forward to experiencing that in the future over and over again.”
