Writing for the student newspaper at UC Berkeley was one of the best things Katie could have done for her career—that and joining Twitter. She tweeted all her stories, and one day, a follower sent her a message about an opportunity at the San Francisco Chronicle, helping her land her dream job.
Variety is what keeps Katie’s job so interesting. She gets in every morning around 8 AM and begins her day reading the news online. After getting a lay of the land, she spends the morning writing time-sensitive stories, and the afternoon working on long-term projects. Her favorite part of the day is brainstorming new stories with her colleagues.
“My favorite thing about the Chronicle is the culture of creativity that we have here. It’s so encouraging. We’re always trying to bring new things to our audience.”
“It’s really rare that you get a ‘no’ when you have an idea here. You may have to adjust it or work with your manager, but almost always it’s, ‘all right, that’s cool—let’s try to get that together,’ so I really love that when I have a cool idea, I can always make it happen here.”
