Mike studied actuarial science as an undergraduate, and then obtained a master’s in statistics and an actuarial certification. While in graduate school, he did a co-op in State Farm’s Property and Casualty sector, and then worked in a conventional actuary role at a consulting firm in Chicago. He came across a posting for Metabiota and liked how untraditional the role was for an actuary—so he made the move to San Francisco.
Mike arrives to the office around 8:30 AM and creates a task list by referencing his team’s JIRA Agile page that guides his priorities for the day. He spends a lot of his time coding in R, Bash, and SQL to build large-scale simulations and empirical models of how diseases might spread. Mike also meets with the entire Data Science Team daily, when they discuss their tasks and any roadblocks to their work.
