Mateo studied economics at Cornell University. As an immigrant to the United States, he knew that upon graduation he wanted to give back to the country that provided him and his family with so many opportunities. Mateo started in the FBI as a Spanish and Portuguese contract linguist assisting case agents with counterintelligence, counterterrorism, and criminal investigations. His impressive work helped him become a full-time FBI employee.
Mateo gets into the office early each morning, but he splits his time between his base and around the country, attending recruitment fairs on college campuses to engage with potential applicants one-on-one. He also helps finalists move from preliminary processing to background checks so that they can start their public service careers with the FBI.
“One quality to be successful here in the FBI, I would say, is initiative.”
“What gets me excited about the future here at the FBI is recruiting the best and the brightest to our organization—there’s a lot at stake in the safety of our communities and national security, and we need the best.”
