It was a Teach for America summer placement that brought Rebecca to Democracy Prep. When the writing teacher at the school where she worked left, Rebecca was offered the position. Later, when Democracy Prep launched Pathways—a program for scholars with IEPs—Rebecca jumped at the chance to be part of something new and exciting.
Rebecca spends her days teaching scholars with severe learning disabilities. These are students who have been selected to join Pathways for extra attention. When teachers like Rebecca feel Pathways students are prepared to be successful in a mainstream classroom, the students are sent back to their home schools eager and ready to learn.
“I love that I found a job where I can be my true self, and that’s helping other people embrace their inner quirks.”
“I think of teaching as a social justice-driven profession. I don’t know if it’s always framed that way, but that’s part of the reason that I started teaching—because I saw it as a way for me to bring about more justice in the community and country I live in.”
