At Dartmouth College, Bill studied economics and English with a concentration in creative writing. After graduation, he held a few internships and gave the consulting field a try before finding his way to CarMax. The rewarding challenges of CarMax—and the proximity to great fly-fishing—creates the ideal work-life balance for Bill.
Bill keeps regular hours, but he likes to inject some lunchtime basketball into his day for a jolt of energy, especially when the CEO joins the pick-up game. Much of Bill’s role involves creative problem-solving, and aside from a few regular meetings, he likes to get into the thick of his work at his desk.
“CarMax loves to promote within—and there’s lots of opportunity to go horizontally, in addition to vertically. So if you see something and you’re really excited about that, you can talk to your manager and probably get to work on that, sometimes without even leaving your team.”
“To be successful as a data analyst, it’s important to have both an interest in finding the truth in sets of data and the creativity to look in places you might not initially think of.”
