Melissa majored in chemistry—and minored in philosophy—at Colgate University, where she performed lab research until the slow-going lengthy turnaround times got to her. She found BlackRock during her skills-based search for fast-paced jobs in the field of finance, and her role now includes the same problem-solving, data-centric approach she perfected in the lab.
Melissa applies her science background to risk analysis as she parses through data—and academic articles—to help investment teams manage their fiduciary risks. Her position at BlackRock introduced new skills, like coding, into her repertoire, and she interacts with senior-level staff regularly. Melissa's favorite part of the job? There's always more to learn.
"I feel like I'm doing so much and adding real value, which I think is unique for a first job—and for being in a position for such a short amount of time. I'm learning a ton, and I feel like there's so much more left for me to learn here."
"What surprised me the most about BlackRock was the emphasis on the client—and how much that framed every discussion about everything."
