Valda’s Story
The Perfect Path
Valda had many potential careers growing up, but the three that stood out to her the most were a writer, a scientist, and a lawyer—and she fortunately wound up finding a job that encompasses all three. After earning graduate science degrees in South Africa, Valda moved to the U.S. to earn a PhD in chemistry and worked in a cell biology department before joining the AAAS team.

What Valda Does
Deputy Editor, Science
Valda starts her day by reviewing manuscripts that have been circulated to her and assigning new manuscripts to her team of editors. She then handles any pressing problems regarding that week's edition of Science and edits some papers herself. Valda is also typically involved in a variety of meetings throughout the day that can range from what's going on the cover of Science to strategizing ways to improve internal processes.
