“What most excites me about Progressive Insurance now—and even in the beginning—is that I feel like we’re an idea company,” shares domain architect Joshua Taranowski.
What exactly does he mean by that? Well he means that this major insurance provider is all about taking its employees ideas—whether they be about the product, about their career development, or just about their quality of life—and doing its best to make them a reality.
Let’s say you have an idea about how the company’s product could be improved. As an insurance company with a tech company spirit, Progressive is all about encouraging experimentation and new ideas. The Business Innovation Garage acts as an internal think tank, providing the resources employees need to quickly prototype and test ideas before pitching them to their managers—giving them more clout to show why the company should run with their ideas. In the company’s Edison Challenge, select teams get to pitch their ideas directly to chief officers.
Have an idea about learning new skills or growing your career? Progressive has made some pretty impressive moves to support continued education for employees. The company’s tuition assistance program generously covered most of IT Solution Architect Lead Rachele Mackey’s educational expenses when she obtained her master’s degree. This allowed her to gain new skills and transition from her initial position as a production engineer to her current role.
Master Data Scientist Dominic Valentino was allowed to work remotely from an office in a different state while he worked towards his master’s degree.
Plus, employees have flexibility to train and excel with networking company groups. By participating in classes, applying resources, and presenting ideas among peers, team members can invest in their success—and masterfully learn by teaching.
Even if your idea is just about wanting a little more work-life balance, Progressive is there to help you. The company provides access to personal trainers, an onsite fitness center, and programs such as running clubs. “Employee health and wellness comes first at Progressive,” explains Mackey. “Progressive treats its employees well and is always looking to develop and find the best fit for them.”
