What's in a Name? At Quirky, Everything
When a company is named Quirky, there are certain expectations about its culture and philosophy. You’d expect working there to be fun, rewarding, and stimulating—and probably cooler than the average 9-to-5.
You’d be right. Quirky, an online platform that lets everyday people come up with awesome inventions, is a passionate person’s paradise.
“We have built this amazing brand about making invention accessible,” says Viresh Chopra, chief design officer. “There are very few companies where you can see products go from sketch to store.” In five years, the Quirky team has witnessed this process 350 times, designing and launching 350 brand new products influenced by its community of over 1 million enthusiastic inventors.
And employees definitely get in on the inventing action as well. During “24-Hour Challenges,” team members have one day to invent a brand-new product for companies like Apple or Home Depot. Quirky’s employees and community vote on ideas, and then employees work intensely through the night to create a unique and ready-to-market Quirky product.
For the ideas that employees spontaneously generate, there’s unlimited access to several office 3D printers, which they can use to develop physical prototypes and samples of products whenever they want. That means awesome ideas become tangible items in just a couple days. Talk about enjoying the fruits of your labor.
For a company that moves this fast, the sky is the limit. Literally. “We started off with smaller gadgets, then moved into appliances. Who knows—maybe one day we will be making airplanes,” says Julia Troy, senior industrial designer.
