Award season is in full gear—the Golden Globes were a few weeks ago, and on March 2, the Academy Awards will dole out their annual trophies. Everyone wants to be in the know when it comes to the entertainment business, but these days, between skyrocketing ticket prices and perpetually packed schedules, who has time to see all the nominated films?
Well, you’re in luck: We’ve put together a gloriously simple synopsis of some of the year’s best films, so you’ll be well-versed for any water cooler Oscar banter. (Just beware of some spoiler alerts.)
1. American Hustle
Married con artist meets mistress. They romance in a dry cleaners.
They steal a lot of money together.
The FBI catches them.
To save themselves, FBI agent convinces them to entrap local politicians.
Wife of con artist threatens the whole operation.
Con artist and mistress double-cross FBI agent.
Con artist and mistress run away together.
Biomedical engineer excitedly embarks on first journey to space.
She and fellow astronaut set out to repair the Hubble Telescope.
Debris strikes the duo and their ship, stranding them in space.
They make their way to the International Space Station, where chaos ensues.
Engineer finds a capsule that takes her back to Earth.
Once back to Earth, the capsule malfunctions and she sinks to the bottom of the ocean.
She finds an air pocket and swims her way back to safety.
Divorced man is desperate and lonely.
He makes his operating system a female.
A friend sets him up on a blind date, OS convinces him to go.
He realizes he only wants to spend time with OS.
They start dating, and he falls in love with her.
No one understands him, except his friend who’s also found companionship with her OS.
The OS’, who exist in an advanced society, both leave the companions who loved them to be with their own kind.
Old man thinks he’s won a magazine sweepstakes—one million dollars!
He is determined to collect his winnings.
Begrudgingly, his son indulges him.
They journey to Nebraska to attempt to collect the prize money.
Along the way, the son learns more about his alcoholic father and his family.
When they arrive, instead of one million dollars, the man wins a hat.
To save face, the son trades his old truck for a new car and lets his father drive it into town.
5. The Wolf of Wall Street
Young, eager stockbroker lands a job on Wall Street, the market crashes, and he gets fired.
Stockbroker and his neighborhood friends start their own trading company.
They make lots of money, do lots of drugs, and have lots of sex.
The FCC starts investigating.
To save their millions, brokers smuggle their money to Swiss banks.
After a long investigation, FCC arrests the head broker.
He goes to a white collar prison for a bit and then becomes a motivational speaker.
