Tell us about yourself! Give us your elevator speech!
I came to Counsyl with several years of software sales experience, combined with prior bench experience in DNA sequencing for the Human Genome Project and in OB/GYN research.
What were you looking for in a job?
My ideal has always been to combine my sales and business development career with my interests in science and healthcare. At the same time, I enjoy work that is innovative, entrepreneurial, and disrupts the status quo. Startups tend to fit well, but Counsyl fits perfectly!
What were you doing before this job?
I was a corporate sales consultant for Seamless.com, introducing the brand and solution to Los Angeles area offices, from startups to publicly traded companies.
What attracted you to the company when you found it on The Muse?
I’ve been following Counsyl since April 2013, when I read a TechCrunch article about it. It was fascinating to me that it's a software company that used the data from the Human Genome Project to create a tangible healthcare screen that is not just life-altering but also affordable. I was working for a company I enjoyed, but when I spotted The Muse posting at Counsyl a few months later, I jumped to apply.
How did you use The Muse to help you in your job search?
For me, a fit with company culture is just as important as a fit with company goal. While I was not unfamiliar with Counsyl as a company, I had no inkling of company culture until applying through The Muse. Specifically, I was attracted to a commitment to camaraderie and collaboration, from eating meals or participating in gym classes together to cross-departmental training and opportunity to travel with and learn from colleagues in other territories.
Any advice from someone who wants a job like yours?
The interview process is competitive and fast-paced, consisting of a series of Skype interviews, writing and assessment tests, and proceeding to presentations to executives at company headquarters. The point is to determine mutual fit, both for the specific role and within the company culture. It’s tough, but you can be assured that you’ll be working on a team with the very best, brightest, and most creative.
