How I Found the Perfect Place to Start My Engineering Career
Our mission here at The Muse is simple: to help you find your dream job. So, there’s nothing we love more than hearing about it when you do!
Today we chatted with Ari Brenner, who recently landed his first job as a software engineer at StellaService, where he’s helping create a world with better customer service. He works on products that evaluate the customer service effectiveness of online retailers and guide them to build better interactions.
What were you looking for in a job?
As a recent graduate of Connecticut College and App Academy, I’m just starting my career as a software engineer, so I wanted to work at a young, fast-growing company where I felt like I could be really valuable to the team. That’s exactly what I found at StellaService; I get to work hard, solve real problems with a great team, and ultimately play a big part in building something new every single day.
What attracted you to StellaService?
The thing that I found most attractive about StellaService was the passion that everyone had. When I came in to interview, the developers, the founder, the people in HR, and my would-be supervisor were all extremely driven and excited about being on the Stella team and the product they were building.
What’s something most people would find surprising about working at this company?
People are always surprised when I tell them how much flexibility I have working on my team. Every week I get to choose what part of the project I want to work on, whether that’s developing a cool new feature or page for our app or sitting down with another developer to tackle a big problem.
We also have an incredible team dynamic. When we get stuck on a problem, it’s easy to ask one of my co-workers for a hand or just another set of eyes. The goals we set each week are never too far for us to achieve since we work together so well.

How did you use The Muse to help you in your job search?
The Muse made it easy for me to search for exactly the kind of job I wanted—specifically software jobs in NYC—and then provided a lot of great information about each available opportunity. I felt like I knew a lot of information about Stella from reading about it on The Muse before I even visited the company’s website.
What advice would you have for someone who wanted a job like yours?
Before working at Stella, I took a three-month web development course at App Academy. This was super valuable because I learned many of the technologies that I use working at Stella every day. For me, it was the perfect transition from graduating college to starting a career in software, allowing me to practice building web applications, and I don’t think I would have landed my awesome job without it!
But beyond that, my advice would be to get on the computer and program every single day. Make a game, a web app, anything that requires focus and brain power.
