Our mission here at The Muse is simple: to help you find your dream job. So, there’s nothing we love more than hearing about it when you do!
Today, we caught up with Marilee Pelayo, who found her dream job working as a Talent Acquisition Coordinator at Ascend HR Corp, helping companies in the healthcare, IT, energy, and real estate industries find the perfect candidates—and then keep them once they’ve gotten the job!
Tell us about yourself!
I’ve always wanted to work in the human resources field. I graduated with a masters in psychology with a concentration in industrial organizational psychology, and I wanted to put my education to work.
My passion is all about the people. Whether I’m working as a coordinator in the human resources field or when I’m out around Houston with friends, I like to be around people. Which probably means that my secret talent is being friendly!
What are some of the great things about working for Ascend HR Corp?
I like how Ascend HR Corp is so modern, from how we work with our clients to the tools we use. Instead of limited phone and email communication, I am able to work in our client’s office on a daily basis, understand the flow of work, and provide help at all times.
I also like how Ascend HR Corp is a small company. Communication with my co-workers is so fluid and easy. Whether I am in the office or with the client, I feel a strong support from them. We always praise each other when we achieve something big or small. It seems cliché, but I believe work recognition is vital for a business to thrive and grow. Just a few weeks ago, one of our employees was promoted in the company and all of us freaked out—we were so happy for her! This support and the modernity is what makes Ascend HR Corp such a good company to work for.
What’s your favorite part so far?
Brutus and Oliver, the two awesome dogs that “work” with us! They are the guardians of the office, and their main job is to bring smiles to everyone’s faces. I mean, look at them!
So far, I’ve very much enjoyed working with Ascend HR Corp as everyone on the Ascend team is truly a part of the family.
Is there anything from The Muse that helped you out in your job hunt?
The Muse had articles that were incredibly relatable to me during my job search. The most impactful one I read was one on sending emails to your network to help you find a job. From April to June of this year, I was unemployed. I had the right pieces—solid experience, a fairly expansive network, a friendly personality—but I didn’t know how to put everything together. The article above really helped bring out what I needed to say.
What advice would you have for someone who wanted a job like yours?
The job search process can be frustrating, but don’t give up. If you’re going to work with clients, you need to be good at building solid relationships. Get to know your clients: their culture, their environment, the people in the department you will work closely with. Understand them on a different level. Don’t just talk about work, talk about what’s going on in the world and how they are doing in life. Trust is built that way, and when that’s established, you will be able to understand their business needs.
