Jatinder Singh, the director of platform engineering for HotelTonight, perfectly sums up the company’s culture in one sentence:
“HotelTonight is a company that has a laser focus, but also a lot of fun and flexibility.”
Let’s break it down.
The Laser Focus
The company is building apps that allow travelers to find last-minute hotel deals on their phones and tablets. HotelTonight is experiencing huge success and a ton of growth—which wouldn’t be possible if its team wasn’t so passionate, hard-working, and intellectually curious.
“People here are very passionate about the work they’re doing. They don’t have an idea and just hope it gets done—they get busy executing it,” says Hope Whitney-Monical, mobile QA engineer.
What’s your favorite drink? HotelTonight stocks each and every employee’s drink of choice in its office bar. Coffee and snacks are always up for grabs as well, along with catered lunches three times a week and company breakfast on Fridays.
Not only does Friday start in the kitchen, it ends there as well.
“We like to gather together every Friday at our bar to have a drink or two, hash out the week, and just enjoy each other’s company,” says Cameron McNair, market manager. “We’re all great friends.”
At some companies, every decision comes from the top down, and employees don’t get many opportunities to voice their opinions. Not this company.
HotelTonight’s team is shaping the direction of the company together. Every quarter, co-workers submit their ideas, then the group collectively decides what to tackle. Everyone benefits from the sense of ownership and responsibility this generates.
