Cabana to Cubicle: How to Wear Tropical Prints to Work
Fun tropical prints are ideal for summer days lounging by the resort pool or touring tropical destinations. Unfortunately, though, the majority of our hours during this time of year are still spent shivering in our air-conditioned cubes.
But instead of letting your favorite resort wear go to waste the rest of the summer, take a nod from this season's abundance of tropical prints and try wearing the splashy trend in the office. Though—keep in mind that these loud prints can go from trendy to trashy very quickly, so take extra care in styling them for the workplace.
Read on for some easy tricks for incorporating your favorite tropical prints into any workplace—from conservative to casual—without looking like a walking palm tree.
Conservative: Printed Dress and a Blazer
Pairing a fun tropical print dress with a more subdued and formal blazer is a good way to make this trend appropriate for offices on the conservative end of the spectrum. Keep accessories to a minimum, and make sure your dress isn't anything that could be misconstrued as a cover-up by choosing a silhouette that reads sophisticated (like the Michael Kors shift dress on the left) instead of beachy. The juxtaposition of the crazy print with a classic and well-tailored shape is what will make you look chic and work-ready.
Pair with a black blazer to tone down the print, or pick another solid colored blazer (choose one of the colors that's in the dress so you don't go overboard) if you work in a more relaxed office.
Business Casual: Tropical Top and Conservative Bottom
Another option: Pair a tropical print shirt with a work wardrobe staple, like a black pencil skirt or black cropped pants. The classic black will balance out the bold print, making it work-ready. Choosing a tailored top or one in a more modern shape, like the peplum top below, will make sure you don’t look like a beachside bartender.
Fashion-Forward: Tropical Printed Blazer
Want to make a real statement? Wear your tropical print in the form of a blazer. Keep the rest of your outfit simple by pairing with dark washed jeans and a white shirt, or wear a pleated skirt and tee if you're feeling a bit more adventurous.
Remember—when you wear a loud print, the rest of your outfit should stick to only one or two more colors (including your accessories)!
Anything Goes: Palm Leaf Pant
Believe it or not, palm print pants can actually be cute. They might be too much of a statement in some offices, but if you work for a more relaxed or creative company, they’re a fun way to spice up your work wear.
Wear these show-stoppers with a white or cream silk button down to add a little refinement to your ensemble, and as usual for a busy print, keep accessories to a minimum. If anything, wear simple and dainty gold jewelry.
