Well ladies (and gents), we’re in the home stretch—just a couple more months of this gray and dreary winter left before we can start wearing our brights and pastels again. (Frankly, I’ll be happy just to have on fewer than three layers .)
If you’re itching for spring and are feeling a little blah in the wardrobe department, too, don’t worry your stylish little head. Getting into a mid-winter style lull happens to the best of us (unless, of course, you live in Southern California, or Tahiti, or any other warm place I wish I lived), and I’ve put together some solutions for brightening up your look now, before the frost even begins to thaw.
1. Wear a Winter Accessory That Pops
If you don’t have a bright piece of outerwear already, invest in one. It doesn’t have to be a coat—just get some fun new gloves, a scarf, a hat, or even earmuffs! (Read: Instead of spending your hard-earned money on a highlighter-yellow coat, get some screaming pink gloves to dress up that classy camel coat you already own.) If you’re into the fluorescent neon trend, go for it, but bright can also mean a super-saturated jewel tone or even a spring-like pastel.
2. Make Your Jewelry Box Bright
Take an old necklace (or buy a cheap one from Forever21 or H&M), spray paint it a bright neon color, and wear it with your winter basics. I personally love doing this with necklaces that are super feminine and traditional in style to juxtapose with the modern pop of neon. Using a more delicate necklace looks really unexpected and fun, and keeps the necklace from becoming too loud and overwhelming.
Also make sure to buy a necklace that lays flat, like a rhinestone collar, as opposed to something rounder with beads or pearls—this will make it easier to ensure you coat everything with paint. Start with a coat of white spray paint and then add the neon to really make the color pop.
3. Prep Your Face for Spring
An easy and less time consuming tip? Try incorporating some fun spring colors into your beauty routine. Sure, we’ve loved the dark plum and deep wine lipsticks of winter , but we could all use something more playful as we anxiously await warmer temps.
Try some fuchsia lipstick—my personal favorite spring and summer lip color is a good matte bright pink, which is really flattering on most skin tones. Or, if you’re feeling extra bold, go with a neutral lip and try a bright eye shadow or eyeliner. Just beware—this look can go very tacky, very quick. Be sure to spend a little time on Pinterest or The Beauty Department for inspiration on how to do it right—you want to look like you walked off the runway, not like you walked out of the 80s.
4. Rock the After Labor Day White
I’m serious! I know you’re all thinking, “No white after Labor Day,” but I’m here to say that it’s time to do away with that rule once and for all. Now, I’m not saying you should break out your white sundresses—I’m talking more along the lines of white skinny jeans, a white blazer, or a winter white skirt. Wearing suits is in, so you can even try wearing some matching pieces! If you’re not feeling that brave, just incorporate one white or cream piece into your outfit for a little pop. Although it’s not technically a color, white is still sure to brighten your winter mood.
Spring, here we come!
