Makin' It (at) Work: Spot On
Polka dots are all but ubiquitous these days, much to Lindsay's delight. As long as she can remember, they’ve been a signature of her personal style—and she’s thrilled that she can stock up on all kinds of spotted garments this season.
The best part about polka dots? They're simultaneously classic and fashion-forward. While many Fall 2011 trends have tried to strike this balance, nothing embodies it more than the polka dot. It's feminine, timeless, and current without being tacky or predictable—and can work for after-hours cocktails as well as on the job!
We especially love Stella McCartney's most recent interpretation: combining polka dots and sheers. It's slightly suggestive, but we think the sheer sleeves give their polkas a fresh edge. And we'd love to wear the Lanvin off-the-shoulder dress for a night out on the town.
But wearing dots during the 9–5 can be tricky, due to their costumey nature—they need to be chic and office-appropriate without coming across as too cute or clownish.
We find that choosing medium- to small-sized circles helps to avoid the silly sentiment, and keeping the outfit's overall color scheme simple helps, too. Lindsay's polkas are about as big as we would recommend for the office—any bigger and she'd be pulling a Minnie Mouse!
While we think that black and navy backdrops with white spots (or the reverse) looks best—especially for clothes—we also recommend trying accessories like purses or scarves in different dotted hues. Our current favorites: yellow or red with white dots. It's incredible how much adding vibrant color can up the playfulness of a polka-dotted piece!
How will you be wearing polka dots this season?
